A Special First Holy Communion Project

I am delighted with how this dress turned out. It was designed to be an "heirloom" piece, and I tried to give it the flavour of the style of the mother's own First Holy Communion dress, which had sadly not lasted the test of time, being a somewhat yellowed man-made fabric. Using a pure cotton embroidered fabric, and trimming the high collar, yoke and hem with some lovely cotton Nottingham lace, (a rare find, I found on a market stall in Nottingham!) as well as a broderie anglaise trim on waist and cuffs, it has a lovely timeless quality to it. There is a matching rosary purse which is detachable, and a little first communion book bag.
May Amanda be richly Blessed on her big day.

Detachable rosary pouch pocket.

For the old-fashioned veil, in the style of the cap veils of the 1920's/30's I used the same trim as on the waistband and sewed on a lace Chi Ro and Holy Communion symbol. I really enjoyed looking at photos of First Holy Communicants from the first part of the 20th Century, to get an idea of how the veils were made.

I love the satin rose details at the sides, see below Amanda wearing the veil.
